Unless it's just a case of me being a bit dim, I couldn't find the button to put this on the poll thread. So here's my bit about mods:
I never used them in Sims 2, not at all. I didn't even know they existed. CC came into my peripheral vision after Apartment Life was released, but I didn't understand it at all so I shunned it greatly.
With Sims 3, however, this all changed. As I was posting on the Sims 3 forum where mod/CC discussion is the norm, I began to grow curiouser and curiouser. While I did not download any mods at first for fear of my game exploding, I gradually weakened and decided to put in some little mods; I downloaded the one that makes your baby bottle turn white and after it worked properly, I downloaded more. And more. Only the little ones, mind! Meet Co-workers immediately, no Zzzs/Musical notes etc. I swore I would never download any huge, game changing ones.
Until generation 5 of my legacy kicked in.
While Summer and Simon were at school, there were barely any other children their ages. I do believe that for a time, Simon was the only kid in the Elementary school! EA's Story Progression was killing my game, basically, there were elders everywhere and very few other Sims. I tried plonking down lots of Family Orientated couples, to no avail.
At this point, I discovered Nraas Industries, I do believe via Ashleigh.
Game saver.
I literally would not be able to play without the Nraas story progression/super computer mods now. Not only are they addictive, they improve gameplay by so much it's not even funny. I know they're not CORE MODS (cowers from the scariness of the thought of them) or anything, but to go from not even knowing mods exist to successfully downloading biggies is a big step for someone like me. Essentially, someone extremely daft.
So yeah, that is my modding experience. I'd love to hear some more. Hint hint, silent world!
