Ashleigh, here is how I fixed the problem you are having in your game.
1. Clean your registry. I use a free cleaner called CCleaner and it works just fine. 2. Clear all temp files. 3. Erase your version.tag in your Documents/The Sims 3 folder. 4. If doing all of that still doesn't work, then as a last resort do the following: Go to your DCCache folder. Erase the file called missingdeps.idx.
Hopefully these things will help you.
Also, with the exception of Twallan's mods, I run NO CC anymore. If I download from the Exchange I ALWAYS check for and erase that stupid doll.

Just so you know, this isn't a fix I came up with on my own. I did A LOT of troubleshooting with EA...they finally crapped out at about the 3rd level of support after giving me a $20 coupon for all of my trouble. Then I went to the forums and then I went to Google Answers. With a combo of all of the advise, I managed to get my game to work again and it's a lot better than it was before.

Is that for the game randomly freezing and crashing?

I was having start up errors like Ashleigh. I couldn't even start the game even with CC disabled. I got script errors and the like. The randomly freezing and crashing issues seems to stem from overworked video cards. That's a fail-safe to keep your card from fritzing. Other issues might cause the freeze and crash, but mine generally happen when my game is too hot.

Hmm, strange. I run the game on an FPS Limiter program so my video card never goes above 30 FPS when I play the game.
I will try those, Heather. Those are all things I would have never thought to check. I don't think my CC is the culprit, since I've been trying to run the game without any CC or mods installed.
I can't live without CC, but I am a lot more picky about what CC I download and I NEVER download off the Exchange anymore.
EDIT: How aggravating. I cleaned my registry, and looked for all those files you suggested to delete, but they weren't there, since they're spawned when you first play the game and I haven't been able to start up the game since reinstalling. I'm still getting the error.

Look in your my documents files. You might not get the version tag, but the missingdeps.idx should be in your DCChache. I know that I did Everything to get my game to work. Have you contacted the customer service...they won't be able to fix the problem (probably) because they're idiots, but if you go enough rounds with them, they might offer you the same $20 coupon that I got. It isn't quite the same, but nonetheless made me feel better

I ended up just uninstalling Ambitions completely after uninstalling and reinstalling and jumping through hoops a million times.
I can play my game now, but I don't have Ambitions anymore. Every time I install it, it gives me the same error, even without patching.
